closet cleaning question....

I have a closet cleaning question...

So I have these nice button up shirts and two suit jackets I used to wear when I taught creative writing. Now I work in a fairly casual office (cardigans and dress pants, knee-length skirts and blouses, etc), so I find myself very rarely wearing the button ups and Never wearing the blazers.

My question is this--should I hold on to these things in case I get a new job that requires this type of dress, or should I donate them to someone who would wear them more now?

I say I like the button down and jeans or blazer and jeans look, but I don't personally Ever wear it...

I know it would be at least a year before I would be able to work a new job, and I'd only really be looking for teaching jobs again. I'm not even sure if a woman who teaches creative writing would be expected to wear a blazer?

anyways, any advice on this would be very welcome! My apartment is small and I hate to hang on to clothes for no reason!

I found an authentic Dooney&Bourke bag (looks like this) in our apartment building's free-thriftstore last night!

I'm guessing not many of the ladies there knew it was name-brand or else it would've been snatched up sooner.

Sadly, the strap is broken on one side (but hey, it was free!)--not the leather though, its just missing one of the metal hooks that connects the long strap to the bag. I've got it rigged up right now with a metal hook I found in my jewelry-making-kit, so you really would only notice that the original hook is missing if you were looking for it.

I'm still trying to decide if I should keep it or try to sell it--I don't think I could get much for it, with the missing hook on that side, AND I do really like the classic look of it...

I shower Every Day but shampoo my hair every-other-day lately, since my hair has been too dry from the cold weather. The other day my roots looked a little greasy and i didn't have baby powder or dry shampoo, so i shook a little loose powder on my roots, blended it in, and it worked great!no more grease, just shiney healthy hair

So, if you're thinking about giving the shampoo-every-other-day thing a shot but don't want to put baby powder in your hair and don't want to spring for dry shampoo, try this! it worked for me ;)

This week's Friend Friday (via Modlychic) is about "going natural"

1. The move to do away with soap, shampoo and deodorant has been growing in popularity in the last year. What are your thoughts on this trend?

I think its an interesting trend....but not one that I plan to follow, anytime soon anyways. I feel like we can make ourselves too scared to use any product out there nowadays.

2. Be honest how often do you wash your own hair?

Everyday, though sometimes I skip. I've tried to do the whole "shampooing every other day" or so many times a week, but my hair never "adjusted" like its supposed to, and it felt gross. I just make sure to use a lot of good conditioner so as not to dry my hair out.

3. Have you tried to go the more natural route by forgoing shampoo?

4. What products do you use and have you ever gone with more organic alternatives?

I haven't tried many products like that, mainly because they are so much more expensive than regular products and often don't work as well. I did use Tom's of Maine toothpaste once, having gotten a free sample, and it was kind of grainy and gross. Bert's Bees is a favorite of mine for lipbalm, but I can't afford most of their products.....so maybe one day when I make it big =)

5. What about that daily shower? Would you forgo that opting to shower three times a week instead?

I think the opportunity to have a shower every day is a GIFT FROM GOD! I urge you all to shower.

If I was only able to use ONE beauty product--including hair products, makeup, everything--I would use Facial Lotion w/ SPF 30.

I would say I recommend using Aveeno but that stuff is Expensive, so I use the Walmart knockoff--Equate "Absolutely Beaming" (the bottle even looks the same, its a clever copy and half the cost!).

I only started using facial lotion daily about three months ago and after a few weeks I could see a huge difference in my skin--it really was more glowy and radiant and even beaming. Now I put it on before I go to bed at night and before I put on my makeup in the morning.

Plus, not only helping my skin look/feel better with the lotion, it also has SPF 30, so if I happen to get a little sun I don't have to worry about any skindamage on my face!

All this to say, if you don't use facial lotion w/spf everyday, start doing it--your skin will thank you when you're 30 ;)

Change is literally in the air, bringing with it the cold and rain that requires a wardrobe transition. I must confess to being ill prepared myself and as a consequence have been drenched in the freezing cold. Time to get out your boots and coat because fall is well and truly here. I may stick stubbornly to my floral dresses all year round, but the difference is in the layers. Friend Friday: Criticism

This weeks Friend Friday is about criticism & comments!

1. Do you allow comments on your blog? Why or why not? I do allow comments, though I've thought about taking comments off of my other blog. I guess it depends on what you want out of your writing--do you want it to be JUST for you, or would you want feedback at times?

2. Do you think people at times leave comments that are insincere or not well-thought out? What's the point? I think that happens more with niche blogs (like fashion blogs) than everyday personal blogs, mainly to "get ahead" as bloggers.

3. Would you ever leave a comment that could be considered negative? I leave positive comments--in general, I think people hear enough negativity throughout their day, why add that extra ounce?

4. Most people claim to like constructive criticism. Do you really and how do you offer that kind of criticism to others? I like it in my poetry, but not so much in my blogging, since I blog for fun not exactly as an art form--so I guess it depends on what I'm doing whether or not I want criticism. I only offer constructive criticism if someone asks for it.

5. Some bloggers don't allow comments in order to cut down on negativity. Do you think that is the way to go or are there other ways to deal with the negative vibes? You can always moderate your comments if you're worried about getting negative ones. If you're really serious about being a fashion blogger, you'll probably want to allow some negative comments in there (as long as they are more like constructive criticism and not just hateful bashing), but if you're just doing it for fun, I don't see a point in allowing negative comments.

My husband and I are on a not-spending-money kick right now but with cold weather fast approaching, I really wanted to get some boots (flats just don't cut it, especially in the snow!). So, after I sold a few things on my etsy store, I was able to buy these very reasonably priced lovelies:

I had wanted some Frye knockoffs--had eyed them and talked about them for months!--but when it came right down to it, I needed boots that I could wear with my dressy work clothes or with skinny jeans. The buckles and slouchiness has some of what i liked about the other boots, but since they have a heel they're a bit more dressy. I'm hoping I'll get them in the mail before my poetry reading this friday!

1. What do you think are some of the top fashion don’ts?Clothes that are ill-fitting (whether too tight or too baggy), socks with sandles, not dressing your age

2. What previous fashion don’t do you now wear with pride? skinny jeans. I thought they were ridiculous on everyone when I first saw them, but I loved them when I tried them on myself.

3. Do you think there is a universal fashion do? Figure-flattering clothes. Some colors look good on most people--Navy, Maroon, Cream. I think just about everyone looks good in a cardigan, blouse, and knee-length skirt.

4. What items lately, either recently in style or coming in now, do you think should never make it off the retail shelves? Rompers are for children, not 20somethings. Sorry y'all.

5. In your opinion, is there any blogger, fashion icon, celebrity who some how manages to pull off some fashion don’ts and still look good? no one comes to mind particularly, but I know there are tons of gorgeous celebs and such that can look good in a burlap sack!

I've made a few of these to give to friends and family as gifts, so I thought I would add this to my etsy shop so that people can custom-order them, choosing whatever colors they like for the beads. I like to mix a shell bead, black bead, then another color, but people can choose whatever they like. In the past I've mainly gravitated towards blues and pinks, but I think something in lemony sunshine colors could be fun too.

This week's friend friday is about being authentic--how many bloggers are "for real"?

When it comes to outfit posts on your own blog, be honest are they what you actually wore that day?
I don't do outfit posts very often, but when I do, I post what I actually wore that day.

For a fashion blogger, working in a corporate environment can be tricky. How do you mesh your day job with your personal style choices?
Its not too strict of a dress code--I'm just not allowed to wear jeans to work--so it hasn't been too difficult. Plus, I think its good to have challenges to work around!

When you get dressed in the morning, do you think what should I wear to work or what should I wear for the blog?
Definitely I think "what should I wear to work"! Real life comes first!

Do professionals you interact with ever make comments about your clothing choices?
Definitely! I get complements from time to time from coworkers. Sometimes they think my jewelry (especially statement necklaces) are a little out there, but for the most part I get positive reviews.

Some bloggers openly admit to wearing outfits only for the blog post. What's your opinion on that?
I think its sort of fake....I like fashion blogs because they're essentially "street style"--if you're wearing it just to snap a few pictures in, then its not the real thing.

Food
What is your must-have office snack? I usually don't snack during the day, though I probably should. I sometimes bring my breakfast to work with me, and I usually eat whatever fruit is in season (peaches, apples, pears, whatever!) for breakfast or maybe a granola bar.

How many cups of coffee do you drink every morning? None, I'm not a coffee-everyday type person. Sometimes I'll have a coke zero in the afternoon, if Bryan decides we need to go for a snack.

Caf or decaf? Lately its been decaf, whenever I do go for coffee.

What’s your favorite lunch spot when eating out? I walk home to work everyday, since its only a 5 minute walk!

Style
What’s your favorite outfit to wear to the office? a knee-length skirt, cotton shirt, and flats. That's pretty much what I wear everyday, and what I'm wearing today. I bring a sweater or my jean jacket with me too, since it sometimes gets cold in the office.

Do you keep a sweater at work at all times? I bring a different one with me everyday, depending on my outfit.

Whose style do you most admire at work and why? There's a secretary that works down the hall from me who always wears the most vibrant color combination's. I like her style, its adventurous, especially at a seminary office.

What are the worst office fashion faux-pas? Everyone is modest around here, so that isn't an issue, but I often see girls around the office wear things that are too Old for them--grandma dresses--or wear crocs with a skirt or dress. Crocs are bad enough already, but to the office??

Miscellany
Do you go with reusable or paper/plastic for your lunch sack? I walk home for lunch, so no need. Whenever I bring Bryan his lunch, I'll use a leftover walmart plastic bag. If we don't have any of those, I use my reusable Barnes and Noble bag.

Do you listen to music at work? If so, what? I don't, but I should now that I have an ipod shuffle (yay technology!). If i were listening to music, it would probably be the Jars of Clay or Anathallo.

What’s your desk décor like? Pictures of Bryan and me on each side of my computer--one from our wedding, one from graduation. My polka-dot water-bottle. note-pads for various to-do lists. Secret stash of poetry books and my journal tucked away. various necessary office supplies--folders, inbox, tape, stapler, envelopes, pen-cup, etc. Also, a little leafy plant left-over from the last secretary.

Ruffles have been "in" for the past year or so, which I'm totallycool with, since feminine details are sort of romantic-poetic-ish, and nice to mix in with plainer items.

I keep a list of "wardrobe needs" so as not to get too distracted when window shopping (and not spend money I don't need to spend). My list is pretty short right now--primarily I need sexy date night stuff. First on that list is a clutch.

I've always been a big purse person--how else am I supposed to carry my writing journal and a book everywhere I go?--but I figure that I probably don't need those things on a date with the hubby, and my big work purses just don't look so cute with a little dress.

Here are a few of the clutches I've been looking at:

I need it to be less than $50 (preferrably less than $20). Since clutches are such little accessories, I kind of think that it doesn't matter if they really "match" your outfit. I just want one that looks more sexy-woman and less high-school-prom.

Well I'm quite late on my Friend Friday from last week...seeing how its Thursday..oh well!

This week's discussion is all about size!

1. Should someone's size stop them from fashion blogging or having a voice in the community?
No, I don't think so. I think that fashion blogs are mostly interesting Because they are written by so many varied sizes and styles and types of girls. It'd be boring if they had a weight/height/size requirement for blogging!

2. In your opinion, can the term "curvy" and "plus-sized" be used interchangeably when it comes to fashion? Definitely not--many curvy girls aren't at all plus-sized and many plus-sized girls aren't curvy!

3. Many people make the argument that catering to plus sized women would promote being overweight as "okay". What do you think? Should more designers be catering to plus size women?Plus-sized women need clothes too! And from a business perspective, it'd be pretty dumb not to tap into that market.

4. Should the mainstream fashion industry be showcasing more plus size models? Not exactly "showcasing" ... if they were to make such a big deal about having a plus-sized model, like "we're using this model, Despite her size" then I think it'd be counter-productive. I think using a variety of sizes would be best, just choosing girls based on who is the best Model, not who is the size zero!

5. For you personally, how do you view your size, the struggle with it through the years, your ideal size, etc... Like a lot of women, I have my good days and my bad days. I don't vary much---maybe go up a size or down a size---but how I feel about my size does vary. If I'm feeling insecure or down about other things, my size just gets lumped into the overall feeling of sadness. But, on the most part, I'm happy with my body, especially when I know that I'm eating healthy and exercising, doing my best to stay healthy.

The Thoughtful Dresser by Linda Grant

I checked this book out through inter-library loan a few weeks ago. I've read a dozen or so fashion books this past year and this is possibly my favorite. It is Not your typical how-to fashion book--chock-full of glossy photos and tips on what to wear to cocktail parties. This book is more like a history of fashion, in the world and in Grant's personal life.

This book is more for the person not looking to be told How to dress but interested in learning more about fashion as a subject. The author delves into some of the social reasons certain styles were "in" or "out" during certain time periods, covers size issues, fashion as personal history, style as being part of womanhood. Essentially, she tells us why fashion is important and worthwhile, why it is not just shallow pridefulness that sparks women's interest in fashion, but the essential human need to feel beautiful.

Overall, I highly recommend this book!

With all the traveling and craziness of life lately, I've skipped a few friend friday posts. So I'll just jump in with this one on blogging and privacy.

1. Do you think privacy is something we should worry about as bloggers?
Certainly! I think that everyone should always be careful about what kind of information they reveal on the internet.

2. Do you use your real name or a pen name? What was behind that decision?
I never use my full name, sometimes use my first name, and lots of times just go as my blog title name. While I don't give out personal information on my blog, I do think its good to take that extra precaution, just in case some real information were to slip out.

3. How much personal information do you reveal about your life beyond the blog?
I try not to reveal anything besides clothes related things, but I know that I slip up on that from time to time, which is why I don't plan to keep this blog forever.

4. What will you never reveal?
Any information that would allow someone to find me--address, city I live in, phone number, etc.

5. As bloggers, we have to an extent made ourselves 'public' figures. But still there are things that are intimate to each of us that does not need to be known by anyone that stumbles across our blog. How do you determine what is appropriate for public consumption and what is private to you?
If its something that I wouldn't want a random stranger reading, then I don't post it. I don't post any sort of emotional things that might be going on that particular day, or really anything about whats going on in my actual life. I have a personal blog that I'll sometimes write about those things. On one hand, i feel like there is So much information on the internet, someone has to Want to find your blog to find it--there just aren't as many people randomly stumbling upon blogs as there might have been when they were new. But, on the other hand, its good to not make yourself an easy target. I try to limit what I have about myself on the internet--being a writer, that's sometimes hard to do.

Today's Friend Friday, via Modlychic, fits in well with the 30 for 30 challenge a lot of bloggers, including myself, have been participating in this month--its all about thinking creatively with a limited wardrobe, remixing old looks.

1. What's your most versatile piece of clothing? How do you wear it?
I have to be honest--most of my clothes mix pretty well together, since, although I don't shy away from bright colors, I don't have a ton of patterns in my wardrobe. That said, I think one of my most versatile items is my white old navy vest (pictured Here). Sometimes I wear it buttoned up, like a tank, sometimes as an undershirt, sometimes as a vest. Also, my black short sleeved cardigan gets a lot of use, since it makes my sleeveless tops and dresses work-appropriate (as seen here and here). 2. What one piece should every woman own?
Tough question! I don't think I can narrow it down to just one--I think every woman should own a good pair of neutral colored flats, a good neutral colored tank-top for wearing under things for modesty or just to wear as a top, a good a-line skirt, a cardigan that goes with everything...and of course, jeans that fit well. (for more of what I consider basics, click Here)3. What Summer trends do you love because of their versatility?
Little summer dresses with stretch tops that can be worn as skirts or as dresses. I also love light cardigans.

4. What's the most creative combination you've put together from your closet?
Most of my outfits are pretty simple. I like mixing colors that aren't usually mixed--like my bright pink skirt with yellow skirt here--and I like to belt a cardigan or vest over a skirt from time to time--though, with belting being so in style, I don't know how "out of the box" that is.

5. If you had the guts, what items would you pair and then wear out in public?
I would Love to try mixing patterns--right now, I don't own really any patterned tops, so its not an option--but I've seen pattern mixing done so well by some of my favorite bloggers, and I'd like to try it for myself. As I've said, though my skirts and dresses have some pattern in them, most of my tops are plain, so I don't have a lot of opportunity for pattern mixing at the moment--once my 30 for 30 challenge shopping ban is over, I might go pick up a few patterened tops so I can try out some new looks. There isn't really anything that I don't have the guts to wear in public (excluding things that I feel are inappropriate to wear in public, due to modesty issues)...except maybe socks with sandals. I don't know if I can get on board with that trend.

What are some creative combinations y'all have come up with for outfits? I'm typically a pretty simple dresser--any advice on how to step out of my comfort zone a bit?

I'm taking a little break from the 30 for 30 posting for this week's Friend Friday from the Modlychic blog, talking about travel.

1. Are you going anywhere this summer that will require a suitcase?
I'm going to Georgia next week, on a one-day business trip, then to Boston the first week of August for vacation with my husband. We used to live in Boston, so a lot of our vacation will be revisiting old haunts and catching up with old friends.

2. What are your 'must-pack' items?
A novel, poetry book, pen and journal (for long road trips or plane rides, or visiting the in-laws), jeans, cell phone charger. as far as clothes go, I always pack a pair of jeans, a jersey dress, a skirt, a cardigan, and a few tops. Usually I'll pack flats that I can wear out to something nice or something casual. I try to pack things that I can wear almost anywhere.

3. When it comes to makeup how much of your collection do you pack? What do you take? What do you leave behind?
I bring my facial lotion (with spf), powder, concealer, eyeliner, mascara, lip gloss and physician's formula bronzer (since it can double as blush and eye shadow). I guess I bring pretty much all my makeup, ha! I do leave behind a few things--other colors of eyeshadow, lipstain, lipstick, eyelash curler, etc.

4. Do you have any travel packing advice?
Don't assume the weather will be what the weather channel says it will be--I once packed nothing but dresses and skirts for a weekend with the in-laws that was Supposed to be 80 degrees but turned out to be 50 degrees, and I froze!

5. What one item should every woman pack when going on a vacation?
A pair of good jeans. Nice jeans can be dressed up or dressed down, they can be worn a few different times on your vacation and people won't really notice because they're jeans, and they're comfy.

30 for 30

As of today, I'm taking part in the 30 for 30 challenge hosted by KendiEveryday. The challenge is to pick out 30 items of clothing in my closet and remix them for 30 days -- no shopping, just working with what I have. (Pajamas, underthings, camisoles, bags and accessories don't count in the 30 items).

Ok, you might have noticed, my blog isn't typically an "outfit blog" so please bear with me on my unphotogenicness throughout these next 30 days.

I'm excited about this challenge--I think it will be an exercise in creativity to figure out how to wear so few things so many different ways. and the timing of this challenge is perfect--I'm going on vacation the first week of August and plan to do some major shopping there.

Here's what I decided to work with:

4 Shoes:

black sandals: shoe carnival, pink flats: target, white flats: payless, brown sandals: shoe carnival

My workplace is rather casual in the summer--while I'll need to wear flats a few days a week, I can get away with sandals. And its been so Beastly hot in the south as of late, I'm planning to wear sandals as much as possible.

2 Shorts:

white plaid shorts: thrifted, brown shorts: thrifted

I can't wear shorts to work--dresscode--but I can wear them at home and to church. Hopefully I won't regret choosing to wear two pairs.

7 Skirts: 

khaki pencil skirt: tjmaxx, red skirt: thrifted, black skirt: thrifted, white and black skirt: thrifted, white and yellow skirt: thrifted, khaki a-line skirt: old navy, blue and brown skirt: old navy

I decided to go heavy on the skirts. I went with skirts that are comfortable enough to wear to work or at home or at church, since I figured I'd get the most wear out of them. I didn't choose any pants for this project--its too hot for pants!!

4 Dresses:

navy blue: thrifted, pink and orange: express, teal: steve & barry's, white and purple: target

I'm a little wary about choosing 4 dresses, but I figure I'll just have to be creative with how to work them into my wardrobe for work and play.

3 Tanks and 1 Cardigan:

yellow tank: francesca's collections, white tank: old navy, green tank: tjmaxx, black cardigan: tjmaxx

The tanks will be mostly for afterwork, and the cardigan can make them work appropriate. I think I'll get a lot of use out of the lightweight, short-sleeve little cardigan in the next few weeks!

4 Neutral Tops:

white/blue top: charlotte russe, brown button up: thrifted, black top: gap, white top: F21

5 Colorful Tops:

maroon top: banana republic outlet, blue top: gap, yellow top: thrifted, bright blue top: gap, pink top: thrifted

Although I did use a lot of color in my top choices, there isn't a lot of pattern (like there is in the dresses and skirts). I think things will mix well, I might just need to brush up on my color combos.

Total: 30 outfits for 30 days!

This week's Friend Friday from Modlychic is about fashion bloggers--narcissistic or no?

1. Do you think personal fashion blogging is inherently narcissistic?
Some would argue that All writing is inherently narcissistic. I think it can be, but doesn't have to be--its more about creativity and self-expression, whether its writing poetry or blogging. Fashion blogging incorporates a few different elements of creativity--personal style, photography, and writing. I think that any type of art is always good for a person--people need that creative release, whether they know it or not.

2. I think we can all agree, that certainly some blogs are personal odes to the blogger. In your opinion what makes a blog narcissistic.
Blogs where the blogger obviously does not care about communicating with readers / other bloggers seem vain to me.

3. Would you classify your blog as narcissistic? Why?
I would say it isn't--I always respond to comments, and I like to write about things with my readers in mind--what they'll find interesting or helpful.

4. How can we combat the idea that because we share personal style thoughts/pictures we are automatically full of ourselves? Honestly, I think there are always going to be some people that think fashion blogging (or blogging in general) is vain. I think if we do our best to explain our reasons for blogging, it will help with that somewhat. Also, I think I would tell them that if this is narcissistic, Facebook is too--the carefully posed and edited profile pictures, constant updates on the minutia of everyday life, lists of your likes / dislikes---essentially, all about you.

5. How do you explain what you do to others in a way that doesn't come across as narcissistic? I would say that as a poet, I need a break from writing and reading serious things all the time. Writing a fashion blog is Relaxing--though I love to write poetry, there's a certain pressure to not just write a poem, write an Excellent poem, and there isn't pressure when I'm writing a blog. Of course, I want to do my best at anything I do, but I don't have to worry about each blog post being either rejected or accepted by a literary magazine. And I love the blogging community--its nice to talk fashion with other girls, since I don't know anyone here that is interested in this sort of thing.

Anyways, the hubs and I came got a check from the in-laws demanding that we treat ourselves to a night on the town. So we did!

This weeks Friend Friday is about beach / pool rituals. Confession: I hate the beach. My hubby and I just aren't beach people--I'd much rather spend time exploring a new city or hiking in the mountains or swimming at the lake. To each his own, right? I do, however, spend a lot of time at the (indoor) pool during the summer, and sometimes make my way to a nearby waterpark, so I guess I can give answering these questions a shot!

1. You're headed to the beach/pool, what's in your bag? A towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, a book, a journal, a bottled water, goggles (yes, I'm a dork) and my cell phone.

2. Be honest... how do you feel about sunscreen? How often do you put it on?I love sunscreen. I put it on every 30 minutes or so while at the waterpark / pool. I use SPF 90 -- yes, 90!

3. Do you have any sunburn remedies?Aloe, and lots of whining. But I don't really get sunburned ever...SPF 90...

4. Do you use sunless tanning products? Which do you use, why is it your favorite?
No way! I have blue eyes, reddish hair, and pale skin, and I want to keep my skin looking pale. I know its not as "stylish" to be pale nowadays, but with my coloring, a tan would just look silly on me.
5. The best part about the beach is... Looking out at the vastness of the ocean.

I didn't think this movie was crazy-awesome. It was self-consciously quirky, indie-on-purpose, targeted at a growing market. And, as I've said before, I don't think Deschanel makes a great leading lady.

However, I still covet her style.

The 50's/indie look is cute, and translates well to work-wear (modest, ladylike silhouettes).

Theoretically, these dresses do lots of nice things--nip in with a band at the waist, flounce out a bit off the hips (the all-flattering a-line), and they are easy, just one piece and you're done. My problem with them is that I've tried on possibly a thousand of these (or maybe just enough to get my hair all static-y at the mall), and I've not yet found any that look good on a normal body. The ones my sisters and I have tried on, though they look like the nip in at the waist, actually end up nipping in right under the chest, which makes the dress look sort of maternity-ish or like it was bought in the little girls section.

In short, really cute on the hanger, really stupid looking on my body.

So, if you have the same problem my sisters and I have faced in pursuing these dresses, I recommend getting a similar look by pairing a tank with an a-line skirt, like so:

To get the same look as the tank dress, just make sure to tuck the tanks in. Buying the separates rather than buying the one piece tank dress has its advantages--you can split them up and create a multitude of different outfits. Tanks are pretty useful additions to your wardrobe, since they can be worn under jackets or other tops, with jeans, with skirts, you name it. Plus, when buying separates you can cater to your specific body shape rather than buying the one piece tank dress. This is especially good for women who might wear large skirts and small tops, or vice versa.

So, all in all, I'm not saying that they're bad, I just haven't personally found the tank dress to work in real life, and I'd rather add more versatile items to my wardrobe, the skirt and the tank, than buy a one piece trend item.

Have any of you found one of these tank dresses that worked on your body? (It is possible that my sisters and I are just weird giant people that shouldn't try to wear little dresses....I mean, LP is 5'11".....)

Friend Friday: Nails

This week's Friend Friday is about nails!

1. Do you keep nail polish on your fingers and toes year round?
Yes, especially on my toes--I just feel more put together when my nails are painted.

2. What are your go-to colors for the fingers and toes?Pinks, grey, and navy blue. I actually don't have a huge array of fingernail polish colors. Some colors I'd like to add to my collection: turquoise, orange, black, and white.

3. Any tips for strengthening your nails?
Let them rest a day or two between painting them.

4. Do you have any nail 'rules' you abide by? I really hate the feeling of long fingernails, so I keep mine trimmed to a comfortable length at all times--not to the skin short but not fake-nail long. Other than that, I don't bite my nails and I don't match my toenail polish with my fingernail polish.

5. How often, if ever, do you get a manicure and/or pedicure?
Oh, fun story! I hate anything that has to do with salons--massages, manicures, any of it. I don't like strangers touching me. So I'd vehemently refused to go to any of these type things my entire life, up until I was getting ready for my wedding day and my sisters convinced me I needed to get a manicure and they knew just the guy.They took me to a manicurist that has SIX FINGERS! The extra finger wasn't really a working finger, it just flopped around (touching my hand, eew!!) while he did my nails. I was already grossed out by the idea of manicures in the first place--so many people touching so many people, gross--but the 6 fingered guy was too much. My sisters still say that they just brought me there because he's the "best in hickory withe." Right.

That list is pretty darn extensive. My husband says that he's read somewhere that just about 95% of all U.S. companies use sweatshops and that real change can only happen when China changes its labor laws...and even then, companies would move their sweatshops to South America, to whichever developing country is cheapest to set up shop in. A depressing reality, one that seems unavoidable. So what do we, as consumers, do with all this information?

How To Avoid Supporting Sweatshops:

1. Buy Vintage
Although buying vintage doesn't help the economy as much as buying from a store (since when you buy from a department store, it creates jobs since more products will need to be made to fulfill the demand), it has a lot of amazing benefits--you aren't potentially supporting a company that you don't believe in, its good for the environment, and vintage items are often one-of-a-kind.

2. Buy Less
Again, Not great for the economy, but the longeryou can make your clothes last and work with what you've got, the less these companies are making new products. Also, when you do make purchases, avoid disposable, cheap clothing and buy items you know will last.

3. Shop Smart
Do a little research before hitting the mall and know about the companies where you spend your money. You can look them up by name at Responsible Shopper.com.

4. Support Worthwhile Companies and Small Businesses
Sadly, there are far more companies that mistreat their workers than not, but, if you do a little research, you can find companies that take a stand against sweatshops--Etsy, craft fairs, and small businesses are a great place to start. Also, look for companies that have Union workers--"UNITE" or "Made in the USA" are two things to look for on their clothes.

The Relationship Between Personal Style & Confidence

So Blogger really improved its layout designs today--so many more options, its amazing! I couldn't resist the temptation to redesign with all these new possibilities--you like it?

Anyway, back to business! This weeks Friend Friday explores the relationship between personal style and confidence.

1. When you wear an outfit that you love how does that change your mental state?
Wearing something I love just puts me in a better mood in general--I feel prettier and I feel good knowing that I look the way I want to look. No matter what happens in the day, I can at least know that I look put together, even when I'm not.

2. Do you find that the way you dress can help you be more confident in certain situations?
I'm not a center-of-attention type of gal--mostly, I like being with just a few people and I don't mind spending time by myself--but when I'm wearing something that I really love, I feel a little more outgoing and I'm not as apt to be a wallflower. and wearing heels always gives a powerful kind of feeling--they're great for interviews!

3. Looking back, have you become more confident in rocking your personal style?I was pretty shy about expressing my personal style in high school--I remember wearing my black converse to school one day and getting made fun of for wearing "boy shoes." In college, I really didn't give a flip--I wore whatever I wanted, from blue fishnet tights to stripey pants. I'd say I still fairly much wear what I'd like to wear now, within the boundaries of what's modest by where I work and live--a seminary. I'm more confident in who I am than I've ever been in my life, and I think my personal style has changed because of that, becoming more focused and streamlined.

4. How do comments, in person or on your blog, impact your feelings about a look, clothing choice, etc...Usually I take critique of my personal style the same way I take critique of my poetry--consider what the person has said, then weigh it against what I think. If I feel iffy about something--not sure if it looks good or not on me--then I usually ask a second opinion, but if I don't feel uncertain about it, someone telling me they don't like it isn't going to sway me.

5. To more confident, every woman should....
Find something admirable about themselves and dwell on that rather than dwelling on negative things (or negative comments). When you're in the habit of thinking positively about yourself, negative comments aren't going to phase you--so what if someone doesn't like your outfit? Maybe you're too daring for their taste. Believe in what you do, whether its your art, work, or what you put on in the morning, and you'll be able to maintian personal style even among naysayers.

I like to read. This is no joke--fiction, nonfiction, poetry, blogs, you name it! So I think its about time that I start sharing with you, dear readers, about some of my very favorite blogs. Not just the thousands-of-followers blogs, or famous-bloggers type of blogs, I'm talking about the type of blog that I sneakily read at work because I don't want to wait until I get home to read the newest post.

Bachman's Sparrow is one of these favorites. It's all about DIY, eco-friendliness, and fashion--what's not to love?

R: What led you to decide to start blogging?

Maria: A few things helped “persuade” me to start blogging! I went to college to be a journalist, but became a bit disillusioned with the competitive, high-pace atmosphere and ultimate lack of freedom to write what you want and believe in. Having a blog really allows me to speak my mind and write on topics I love. That coupled with my need for a creative output and my husband’s expertise in internet marketing led to me running my blog fulltime. I’m absolutely LOVING it!

R: On Bachman's Sparrow, you always have the best DIYs! Where do you get ideas for your DIY projects?

Maria: Hahaha, well, for sure Martha Stewart inspires me. I always tell people my goal is to be a combination of Martha, Oprah, and Catherine Baba one day. Besides Martha though, really it comes down to me loving home décor, accessories and clothes that either are: a. Too expensive for me to afford or rationalize buying, or b. I just can’t seem to find in stores. Plus I always convince myself that I could make pieces of clothing that I find, and make it much cheaper. Unfortunately I usually discover the hard way that that’s not really the case lol. R: Who's your biggest style inspiration?

That’s such a hard question. I’m really all over the board in my tastes lol. I’m definitely drawn to the 1940s-50s, but I wouldn’t pinpoint a single person from that era as my style icon. I guess currently I covet Catherine Baba’s eclectic, eccentric look, and perhaps Kate Moss’ alternative chicness.

R: If you had to reduce your closet to just five items, what would they be?

Eep! Another hard one. Okay, I’m going with practicality here over specific loves: one floral print dress, one soft, brown leather jacket, one pair of dark wash jeans (R&Rs please), one retro swimsuit (which would double as a shirt beneath said jeans), and a pair of high-waisted shorts from Marc Jacobs’ spring 2010 show.

R: What is your favorite summer trend? Any fashion predictions for the fall?

I absolutely love all the nautical stuff out right now. I can’t get my hands on enough rope accessories! I also can’t go more than a few days without wearing a turban. As for fall, I hope to see tons of mixed prints and chunky knits return, à la Anna Sui (if you haven’t looked at her fall show yet, DO!).

R: What advice would you give girls shopping on a budget?

Consignment stores are amazing – I’ve gotten so many designer stuff for super cheap and in great condition! Also, I’ve recently discovered my love for discount stores like Ross and Marshalls. Sure it takes a bit more effort, but when you score a great deal it’s such a high! Lastly, if you know your measurements I highly recommend shopping online. Overstock.com and the like are great.

R: What's the best fashion advice you've ever been given? On the flip side, what's the Worst fashion advice you've been given?

Best fashion advice would probably be anything from my mom – she has great taste and tends to support even some of my crazier choices, which I appreciate. Worst advice? When one of my closest friends in middle school told me I couldn’t wear brown!

As I've said before, I have a seriously depleted collection of T-shirts nowadays. After graduating college, I purged my closet of them, the cute and the ratty and the worn to shreds. Recently I've come back around to them. Although t-shirts can get very college-student-grungy, I think that having one or two select t-shirts in your wardrobe is great for more casual days, where you're just wanting to bum around.

I wore this yesterday when my husband and I went to Moe's for dinner then to the guitar store to pick up his bass.

Sorry for the lack of smile--I've been so tired this past week! I guess I still haven't recovered from all the traveling we've done this month.

This is, by the way, the problematic vest I bought and didn't know how to wear. I've decided that it really looks best with a skirt--it looks like I'm wearing a weird kind of uniform when I wear it with jeans. I've been playing around with it more, and found that though I do like wearing a vest every once in a while to give an outfit more dimension, I'm not really a "vest person." And I still debate on wearing it buttoned or unbuttoned.

Also, these are my favorite sandels of all time. I never liked the gladiator look on me..I felt like it cut off my legs and made me look shorter. But these sandels have a Bit of the gladiator feel without overdoing it, I think. I wore the heck out of them last summer and intend to do the same every summer until I wear them to shreds.

1. Which color do you find the most flattering to wear? Why?
The most flattering colors on me are maroon and navy, since the compliment my fair skintone, blue eyes, and auburn hair. I think everyone can find their best color if they just try on enough clothes ;)

2. What color do you never wear? Why?
I never wear beige. My skin is so light there just isn't enough contrast and it washes me out. I also rarely wear brown (unless its in a skirt or shoe)--I just don't like how brown looks on me, I feel like frumpzilla in it.

3. Do you think there are universal colors that can look good on everyone?
There are colors that are easier to wear than others. Jewel tones are fairly easy to wear--an emerald green, sapphire blue. I think black looks good on everyone.

4. What are your tips to wearing a color that is not the best for your skin tone, but you just simply love?
Wear it in small doses and not as close to your face. Brown isn't really my color, but its such a useful neutral its hard to neglect it entirely, so I sometimes will wear it in a shoe, accessory, etc. Also, try on many different Tones of the color you desire to wear. Yellow is my favorite color, and for the longest time I thought I couldn't pull it off, since I'm so pale skinned. Then I discovered that while I can't pull off light yellow, I can definitely wear mustard, gold, sunflower--deeper tones of the same color. If you want to wear a certain color, you can find a way to wear it, just be creative!

5. In regards to makeup... what colors do you avoid, what to you always reach for?
I don't do anything too dark on my lips, since I usually like my eyes to be the focus. I have blue eyes and I've found that bronze, gold, purple, maroons, and navys are all flattering eyeshadow colors to wear. I stay away from any citrus colored eyeshadows--no orange or yellow for me--since they make me look kind of like I'm sick, which isn't really what I'm going for, haha

I want to take a moment to talk about my love of Rehash.

I've always loved thriftstores. Cheap often vintage clothes for less than half of what you pay at the mall? sign me up! This was especially great when I lived in the city---bigger the city, the better the thrift stores (oh dollar-a-pound, how i miss you!).

Unfortunately, I've been less than impressed at the offerings of my local goodwill now that I'm back here in the South. I don't mind digging around for clothes (dollar-a-pound...) but I don't like shopping in a dirty, ill-lit, kind of sketch looking place like our local goodwill. The consignment stores around here are out of my price range, so I was just shopping less and making due with what I have, no matter how sick I got of it, UNTIL...

This is the hippie cousin to swapstyle.com (which I've never used, since the site has been down since I've heard of it). Rehash is all about green living. I love the cheese factor on this site--good trades have good "karma"--and I love how easy to use the site is.

To get started, you just need to take some pics of stuff you want to trade, list them, then browse around looking at other "rehashes" to see what you'd like to swap. I've been on there about a month now (my username is idreamincursive, if you'd like to take a look at my closet cast-offs) and so far I've swapped a bunch of stuff that didn't fit right for a bunch of great stuff that does. This week's Friend Friday (via Modlychic) is about our favorite products.

1. What are the three products you couldn't live without?

(1) Physician's Formula Shimmer Strips in Wakiki Peach Glow. My sister had some of this and I tried it and immediately went out and bought my own the next day. I don't tan (or try to) so I don't really use it as a bronzer---I use the darker colors as eyeshadow (sometimes the lighter colors as eyeshadow too, if I'm feeling like looking more natural) and then use the light color as a little bit of highlight on the cheekbones. I wear this stuff just about everyday and I don't leave home without it!

(2) Aveeno face lotion. (well I use "equate" the cheap Walmart knock off). I have dry skin, so I always put lotion on my face in the mornings before I put on my makeup. The kind I buy also has SPF in it, so it keeps my complexion nice and pale.

(3) Concealer. Even though I'm 24, I still get breakouts when my hormones are all crazy, so I like to keep my concealer handy. Also great for dark under-eye circles, which I get from time to time. I like to use Covergirl brand, in Ivory (paleness!).

2. Which products do you never leave home without?

Chapstick is really the only makeup I carry around in my purse. Other than that, I keep some hand sanitizer. Sometimes I'll carry along my eyeliner, if I'm out for the night.

3. When purchasing what is your one big beauty weakness?

I used to buy a lot of eyeshadows and never wear them. Now I've slimmed it down to just what I wear--a really awesome purple and my subtle bronze / gold colors. I also have some navy and maroon eyeshadows, but I don't use them as much because I need to buy some new eyeshadow brushes for them (mine broke).

4. Do you have a secret remedy, concoction, family tradition that you use?

Not really, though we do have a few makeup and hair secrets-- make sure to use a heavy-duty conditioner at least once a week, if your eyeshadow won't stay all day try putting some powder on your lids first, Always use an eyelash curler, dark lipstick makes your teeth look whiter for pictures, etc. Just the typical stuff!

5. When it comes to your face, what area do you usually try to accentuate?

I have big blue eyes that I like to accentuate. I probably should wear more eyeliner to bring them out, but I usually only wear eyeliner for occassions or dates.

So now you know all my secrets =)

I really like a retro feel for my sunglasses. Maybe I'm wrong on this, but I feel like with sunglasses you can take a bit more of a chance than you would with other things in your wardrobe. For the most part, they're not too expensive, you don't wear them for an Entire day (unless its a day at the beach), and most people own more than one pair.

I particularly like the sunglasses that have a retro feel--the turquoise and the cateye are my favorites! Plus, wouldn't turquoise sunglasses go well with my red hair? I think so.

I love this trench. My hubby picked it out for me, and though I loved the color and the fit, I wasn't sure if I would wear it, since it has a 3/4 sleeve rather than a long sleeve. It turns out that its the perfect little jacket for those rainy summer or fall days for work. And my maroon flats are nearing their death! Maroon is a surprisingly versatile shoe color, and I wear these just about every other day. Its hard to tell unless you look up close, but they also have a cool punky zipper detail that runs across them. I think these are going to be the kind of shoes that I keep until they look as torn up on the outside as they are on the inside.

Most days its going to be too hot to wear this really though. except in the freezing-cold office.

Friend Friday: 10 Random Facts

Modlychic started a project called Friend Friday, where fashion bloggers all answer the same set of questions each Friday. This week the assignment is to share 10 random facts about ourselves.

10 Random Facts about Me:

1. I grew up in the country. Not on a farm or anything, but in a more rural area. I always thought I'd grow up to be a city girl, but my hubby and I lived in the city for a little while and I don't love it nearly as much as the country. My dream is to get an old rambly house somewhere out in the middle of nowhere.

2. One of my biggest dreams is to publish a full-length poetry book.
I've published a short poetry book this year, but the full-length, in Barnes and Noble, type book is my goal. I've only been seriously writing poetry for the past 3 or 4 years, so I know that I have a long way to go to accomplish this.

3. I love Pilates!
I joined a pilates class this past January (new year's resolution season!) and I've been hooked ever since. I've never been an "athletic" person, so it was always hard for me to find an exercise that I could really love. After just a few months, I already feel so much stronger.

4. I read voraciously.
Especially when its poetry. I've been a bookworm pretty much all of my life--my parents really encouraged me to start reading at a young age, and I fell in love with books. My favorite fiction authors are Ray Bradbury, Flannery O'Connor, William Faulkner, and Ernest Hemingway. My favorite poets are Louise Gluck, C.D. Wright, Charles Wright, Sylvia Plath, and Seamus Heaney. Currently, I'm reading "Steal Away" by C.D. Wright, "Through Painted Deserts" by Donald Miller, and "Creativity and the Writing Process" a collection of essays.

5. I have two younger sisters.
We used to fight like crazy growing up, but now we're best friends. We're all so completely different from each other--different personalities, interests, everything! yet in some ways we're so alike. This year especially its been hard being apart, since my youngest sister went off to college. We're all getting together for Memorial day though!

6. I have big feet.
I wear size 10 and sometimes size 11 shoes. When I was in high school, this was a terrible embarrassment for me. But now I figure that a tallish person needs big feet so as to keep balanced. And big feet aren't so bad when you put them in cute shoes.

7. I'm a fainter.
I started fainting every once in a while when I was 16. The worst year of it was my senior year of college--it seemed like I was fainting just about every other week. I got it checked out and found out I have arrythmea (which isn't a big deal, many people have arrythmea) and they said that my fainting is most likely brought on by bottling up my nervousness. I'm not sure if its always triggered by that--I've fainted from being too hot, not eating enough, seeing blood, etc. I think I'm just prone to it. I would've done well in a Jane Austen novel!

8. I love cats.
We never had cats growing up, but my hubby and I have three (which are all now residing with my parents, due to us moving to a no pets allowed apartment). These are my cats right here--the orange is Ralph and the grey is Wallie. When my hubby used to work nights and we were living in a new city where we knew no one, it was nice to have my kitties to keep me company. I know, I'm a cat-lady, haha!

9. I'm a Christian.
My faith is the most important random fact about me! It defines who I am as a person moreso than anything I do, anyone I know, and especially anything I wear. God has blessed me so much in my life and taken care of me in ways I wouldn't have ever guessed! 10. I love baking!
Cakes are my specialty! I've been my family's official cake-baker for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately, now that its just me and my hubby, I don't get as much opportunity to bake as I'd like (since we'd eat it all, and that's not the best idea!). Sometimes I fancy the idea that one day I'll create a cupcake / used book shop and combine two of my very favorite things!

Zac Posen for Target

My hubby and I were wandering about today and made a little trip by Target. The Zac Posen collab is out now, so I convinced him to browse through it with me real quick before we were on our way. Like the Liberty of London collection (or the LOL collection as my hubby likes to say), I wasn't very impressed.

I think the skirt is ok--I like the shiney fabric, but its way too short. And no, I do not recommend wearing it with a swimsuit top =)

The bow-front dress is inventive and a nice conservative length, but a bit over the top for everyday wear, in my opinion. The print in the long dress? Please. If I was going to wear an obnoxious print from head to toe, I would've gone with one of the Liberty of London maxi dresses.

Although I question the practicality of owning a jacket that is only really for raindays, I think this raincoat is kind of cute and mod. Not in love with it (or its price--nearly $50??) but I don't hate it.

This is pretty much a Hot Topic dress. The hubs said that two girls could possibly, if standing intimately close to one another, snap their dresses together. He questions the purpose of this function. I too question this.

Overall, I like the Zac Posen collaboration a bit better than the clothes in the Liberty of London collection. I think a lot of it gets a bit too 80's cheesy though (the t shirt with "zac" in rhinestones? can we say, beadazzler?), and I'm not sure if the prices are really That affordable--for me, if I'm going to pay $80 for a dress, I'm not going to look for it at Target, a discount store. And, honestly, I prefer Merona and Mossimo lines to these designer collaborations, so far at least. But maybe I'm just sad because I miss my Isaac Mizrahi clothes...so cute and so affordable for such a long time.

Walmart Outfit

As promised, here's my under $30 walmart outfit my mother in law treated me to a few weeks ago:

I'd only packed dresses for the weekend we spent with my hubby's family and it ended up dropping from 80 degrees to 50! So she went out and got me this little outfit. I don't normally wear tunic tops, but this is pretty comfy for lounging around on the weekends or going to get some coffee and work on my poetry. I haven't decided what shoes I like best with this outfit--these might be a bit too much matchy-matchy, right? I've also worn this with my grey converse low-tops and with my tan payless flats.

I really like the grey jeans--I'd been wanting to try out a pair of grey jeans (I'd like to get some black skinny jeans too). Is it too dismal looking to pair grey jeans with a black top? I like the look, but maybe that's my dark-poet-side dictating that outfit ;)

oh and, like my mother-in-law said as she bought me this outfit, this shirt could "double as a maternity shirt"

Not yet though, not for me! so be, patient M., it'll happen one day.

Advice Needed: How to Wear This Vest

Last fall I stumbled upon a dark denim vest for $10 at Target--I'd been wanting to try out the whole "vest" look, so I bought it. The problem is, I hardly ever wear it.

It looks sort of like this, minus all the detailing on the front:

When I do wear it, I usually pair it with a plain fitted T (in black or in white) and jeans.

The problem: when I leave it unbuttoned, I feel like maybe its adding unwanted bulk and not showing off my figure, but when I button it, I feel like I look like I'm wearing some sort of weird 70's denim uniform.

I've tried it with a dress once or twice but wasn't super thrilled with the look (though, I admit, I haven't tried it with more than just one of my dresses).

What would y'all pair this with? And would you recommend leaving it buttoned or unbuttoned?

What I Wore: Yellow Cardigan

I really love cardigans and my yellow cardigan is my favorite of all. Yellow is my favorite and luckiest color, so instead of wearing the stereotypical poet garb of black with black on black, I like to wear cheerier colors

My favorite color combinations with my yellow cardigan are maroon and yellow, blue and yellow, and a more basic white and yellow. I went with the white today, since I wanted to wear my favorite pink shoes.

I actually hate shoes--I have big feet and shoe shopping has never been fun for me--but these persuaded me to not hate shoes so much anymore. They're faux-suade, completely comfy, and I like the ruffly detail on the top.

I don't know why my sister decided to get rid of this tank. The buttons are an interesting detail and cause it to ruche a little

I used to think that I couldn't pull off wearing yellow, especially wearing it with white, since I'm so pale (and have no intentions of tanning), but I think anyone can wear yellow if they find the right shade for them. I like to wear my yellows deep and saturated. Its just a happy color and I always feel a little more confident when I wear it.

Is anyone else sick of hearing about "body type"?

Here's a quick rundown of the four body types that fashion magazines like to talk about so much:

Hourglass: has a chest as big as her hips

Pear: has a smaller upper half, larger bottom half

Apple: larger in the middle area, with a smaller chest and smaller hips

Ruler / Stick / Boyish: all-around lanky, with a small chest and hips

I don't think that these four broad catgories accurately reflect the absolutely beautiful form of a woman's body and the variations of the womanly form. Pretty much the only body shape that the media Actually says looks good is the hourglass. And if you're not an hourglass, you're compared to an unwomanly shaped piece of fruit (or a stick). There are no boobs on fruit, unless you draw them. No legs, no smile, no hands (and if there are, I'd watch where you're getting your fruit). I don't believe that all womankind can fit into those 4 easy categories--there are too many variations, dependent on height, weight, etc.

Sometimes I think that the pear and apple shapes get it the worst--people assume just because your hips are bigger than your boobs, you're unhealthy, and that just isn't true. I'm somewhat of a pear-shape, with a chest that's smaller than my hips, but I'm well within my healthy BMI range and I LOVE my butt, thighs, and legs. Just because they're bigger than my chest doesn't mean that they're "too big."

Why should I try to disguise them, why should I be ashamed of my shape? I remember as a teenager I would pour over the magazine's advice for us unfortunate "pear-shaped" girls--try to distract from your bottom half, emphasize the top. Wear ruffles, sequins, scarves, jewelry--draw attention to the face.

I don't know about you, but my butt isn't going to just turn invisible if I throw on a scarf or wear an embellished top.Rather than the whole idea of disguising my body type, I often enjoy disregarding their rules entirely and wearing what I want.

If its a part of your body you haven't come to terms with yet, then minimizing and balancing it isn't a bad idea, but if you're happy (and love) the part of your body that's maybe a bit (or a lot) more noticeable than the rest, why not play it up? Plus, I think big butts and hips are sort of in style right now anyways.

so, all that to say, I'm going to wear skinny jeans Without a tunic top (or a "distracting scarf"), and have no shame.

Saturday Bum Around The House Outfit

My hubby is working today, so apart from house-cleaning, bringing him some cookies and lunch, and catching up on my poetry editing and reading, I'm having a pretty low-key day.

which calls for a low-key outfit

Shoes: no idea, they're just some old sparkly flip flops
Dress: Steve & Berry's, Sarah Jessica Parker's Bitten line ($4, on sale!)
Purse: hand me down from my sister
Ring: made for me by my mother in law

I don't know if y'all have heard of Steve and Berry's--there aren't a lot of them, and the one I used to go to closed down (hence the crazy clearance price of $4 on this dress). The Bitten line by Sarah Jessica Parker had some good design, but none of it fit correctly and the fabric was cheap. This dress was the only thing I thought was really worth $4 (sorry S.J.P., I adore you, but the clothes were just cheap!).

For a bum around the house dress, its got good breathable cotton fabric, and I love the wide straps and ruffles along the sweet-heart neckline.

This purse is also one of my favs--I like the studs, and its big enough to fit my poetry books and journal.

My mother-in-law made this--one talented and sweet lady!

and as for hair and make up, I figured I'd just go with my natural waves today, and probably put on some make up before we meet up with our friends tonight. Oh and the necklace is my cuckoo clock necklace, a gift from my hubby.

1. What's your main purpose in blogging?
For fun--and because I LOVE writing! I was a creative writing major in college (and I have my MFA in poetry). I love to write poetry, but sometimes it is nice to take a break from the intensity of that and just write my thoughts on everyday things, like style.

2. Do you think bloggers should receive monetary compensation for their efforts?
Well...as a poet, I don't expect to make a lot of money off my poetry, so why should I expect to make much off of my blog? If I were to do a blog post for a company, as a freelance writing job, then of course it'd make sense for there to be compensation--same goes for advertising. I don't expect to make my living off blogging (or poetry) but it'd be great if it happened someday.

3. What do you find the most frustrating aspect of blogging?
I feel like some people look down on bloggers--like we're nerds or something, haha. I mean, I am a nerd, but most of the bloggers I read daily seem to be rather cool.

4. What's the most rewarding part?
When readers respond to my posts! I love knowing that someone enjoyed reading my writing!

5. What is one goal you have for improving your blog?
I'd like to start taking some better outfit pictures (not just me in front of a full-length mirror, haha) whenever I do a "what I wore." I'd also like to do some more DIY and How To

Beauty is truth and truth is beauty, but what happens when fashion enters the mix? Several of this week’s links tackle this thorny question with gusto, teasing out the various layers of meaning behind the term beauty and what it means to feel or be beautiful. Ethics and the material nature of style emerged as another dominant theme. The Laundry Narrative wonders if she can enjoy fashion blogging without dealing with the BIG ISSUES. Then there are longer form posts where I felt the writers stretched their narrative legs, some new voices in the game who could use your attention, and, since this is still about fashion, some lovely outfit pics of girls on bikes. Forever21's misguided labeling

Browsing Forever21's website yesterday, I came across this, which they title "Knee-Length Skirt." I would like to point out that knee-length Usually means "touching the knees," not the mid-thighs. This is somewhat akin to when they like to pass off shirts as dresses, like so:

So we had a pretty good mother's day weekend with my hubby's family. I went shopping with the Mother-in-Law at Walmart and got a cute outfit for under $30 that I'll have to post about soon.

On a sidenote, my mom and my mother-in-law won't buy me any tops that can't "double" as maternity tops nowadays. *I Am Not Pregnant!* and don't plan on it anytime soon. I guess it doesn't hurt to be prepared, but I would like to show that I have a flat (ish) tummy while I still've got it, you know?

How To Feel Beautiful

I was a nerd growing up. I still Am a nerd. I love reading poetry, studying poetry, writing poetry. Given the choice, I'd usually rather spend my day at a used bookstore than go to a party.

Needless to say, I got picked on a Lot growing up. I had long dishwater blonde hair, was taller than All the boys in the class yet didn't play sports, and had really big ugly glasses. Not geek-chic glasses, I'm talking UGLY glasses, like these:

I still can't wear my glasses in public without wanting to hide my face (Not that I still wear these--I upgraded to black-rimmed geek glasses in high school).

My high school was a small private school, divided between the working-class parents who did all they could to keep their kids in a good private school, so we could get a good private school education, and the parents who were born into money. Unfortunately for me, kids from working-class families were the minority. If it weren't for my (still) best friend Jenn, I don't know how I would've survived. The poor kids, who couldn't afford "abercrombie" (that was THE brand at my school. I thought it was "abercrombie and finch" for the longest time) or new balance shoes, or whatever else was "in" at the time were bullied. Sometimes I wish I could go back and defend my wimpy little high school self (and Jenn too--despite being a Gorgeous redhead, she got teased too).

Like most high schoolers, I was still trying to figure out who I was, and when the cool kids would tease me about being the "ugly girl" of the class, or reading too much, or whatever else he could find to tease me about, I would really take it to heart. I wasn't tough enough to stand up for myself, and I spent a lot of days after school crying, writing in my journal, listening to The Smiths and Simon & Garfunkel ("I have my books and my poetry to protect me" anyone?). At the same time though, I never really wanted to be part of their crowd. I thought most of them were sort of dumb. I just wanted to be accepted for who I was, accepted and mostly left alone.

Anyway, all that delving into childhood psychology to say, those comments that the bullies make about your appearance as a child don't really ever go away.

after making it through highschool, my "prime suffering years" (LittleMissSunshine), I was a lot less liable to listen to other people's judgements of my appearance. I delved further into my anti-brand-ism by shopping thriftstores (a little too much at times), and, when I caught the attention of a supercuteboy (my now husband), I felt like maybe I Wasn't the ugliest girl ever, maybe my body is ok.

But there is always going to be someone around to tell you that you don't look good. A lot of people do this because they're actually insecure about their own appearance, and putting you down is a way of raising themselves up.

In college there was the girl who just couldn't borrow any of my shirts because they would just "swallow" her. The other day, I was watching a movie with a girl and she pointed out an actress that looked "just like me, except, of course, prettier."
I'm not going to lie, that kind of stuff hurts, no matter how high your self-confidence is! It plants all those little doubts that like to pile up on each other and attack on a day when I'm feeling low. So how to feel beautiful? Its different for everyone. For a long time, I didn't even try to feel beautiful. I focused on being smart and writing and reading, cultivating my mind, and I thought my body doesn't really matter, my mind matters. I think that's true in a sense, who you are on the inside, more important than how you look. A book by its cover, so they say. But I think that it is important to appreciate your body, and to feel beautiful, no matter what size you are. Here area few things that work for me,when those negative comments begin to wear:

1. Wear Clothes You Love
Clothes that fit right, that show your personality, that are beautiful. I don't think it matters so much what the outfit is--whether its a concert t-shirt and skinny jeans or a LBD and stillettos, if it makes you feel lovely on a day when its hard to believe your lovely, then wear it. Even if its just at home for a few minutes in front of hte mirror, just for yourself. It'll make your day a little easier, I promise.

2. Exercise (For Fun!)
Not just to lose weight. I am NOT a sporty girl (nerd, remember?), but I have to admit, getting out and really Using your body feels good. I think that there is a sport or exercise out there for everyone, whether its running, swimming, softball, whatever. For me, its pilates--before I started pilates a few months back, I seriously couldn't touch my toes (embarrassing, I know) but just the other day I realized that my body is actually really limber now. When I'm excercising just because that exercise is something I enjoy rather than exercising because I dislike the way my body looks, I find a lot more joy in it. I've even started taking up jogging lately. Endorphines, fresh air, and a new hobby.

The human body is an Amazing creation! How we can run and build up strength, stretch and become more limber. And, as a woman, my body can harbor new life! When I don't like the shape I see in the mirror--I'm what they call "pear shaped" which means I'm a little hippy, not in the 1960s way--I try to remind myself of the incredible usefulness of my body, and how, even though I don't always Love my hips, they're what is going to help me bring another life into this world (one day).

3. Learn to Love the Differences
I used to hate my cheekbones. They're high and give me a "weird" faceshape (or so I've thought), then I discovered that those high cheekbones come from the fact that I am 1/8th Native American. Some of the features that you might hate about yourself are hereditary, telling of your past and your family's past. How cool is it that you're walking around with history right there on your face?

And don't worry about what the "fashion industry" or mean high schoolers tell you. Comparing yourself to other people is a dangerous road. There is always going to be a girl out there who is thinner than you, has better hair, better teeth, bigger boobs--whatever! Life isn't a competition. There are plenty of girls out there that would envy some aspect of your beauty that you might not even think of as beautiful. It's not worth worrying about! Work what you have and be happy.

Happiness is the most beautiful, enviable feature any woman can have.

Modly Chic does this thing called Friend Friday, where a bunch of us fashiony bloggers answer the same set of questions on our blogs. I think its a fun way to get to know the writers behind the blogs, right? Anyways, this week we're talking about our moms, in honor of mother's day!

1. Which character trait of your mother's do you hope to emulate?
I love how independent and strong my mother is. Growing up, it always seemed like Mom had everything under control, could handle whatever life threw at her.

2. What are your thoughts on your mother's/grandmother's sense of fashion?
My mother's style has evolved a bit in the past few years. She has always loved simple, clean lines, and comfortable, practical clothes. Mom is pretty tall--5'11"--and thin, so she always has a hard time finding things with sleeves that are long enough or jeans that don't look highwater. She's a pre-k teacher, yet she, thankfully, shies away from their typical wardrobe choices--like jean dress jumpers and shirts with applies and worms printed on them. Despite the clean GAP-like tendencies in her wardrobe, you can still see a little flair from her hippie days growing up in the '60's, mostly in these colorful, sort of updated tie-dye tops that she loves. I still hope that I'll grow up to be as beautiful as my mother.

3. When you reach your 70's you want people to look at you and think...
That they love all my poetry books (*dream*) and that I look put-together and energetic!

4. What piece or pieces from your mom's closet would you like to incorporate into your own?
My mom has a few knit tops that are simple but have great lines, and I wouldn't mind stealing them away. Sometimes she does pass down her clothes to me and my sisters, when she's tired of them. Growing up in a household of all girls (except for my poor Dad), there was a lot of clothes swapping going on.

5. What I like best about my mother is...
her free spirit! I love how she can have everything together, yet still be so carefree. She really enjoys life, and looks good doing it!
